The name Ayishah is now born beneath my pen:
     and not for the first time

The name Ayishah -
     and these pictures

Ayishah reciting the Qur’an at Nazareth
Ayishah offering our friend a pomegranate
Ayishah throwing coins across the hexagram
Ayishah recounting the lives of Jethro and al-Hakim
Ayishah climbing down Pisgah
Ayishah contemplating the poems of Neruda and Shimpei
Ayishah copying out my poems
Ayishah naked beneath the cedars
     and in the distance
          the turning sea
baying
     growling
               solitary

The strings of Ayishah’s arms
   bending like frail saplings

The veins in Ayishah’s breasts
   shivering like taut wires
