The Road To Rouen

To listen to The Road To Rouen, click here

You danced for the ones whose spirits were numb
In the midst of a dance-floor conceived by the sun
The morning was cold that you bore on your shoulders
And watched from the dance-floor the years turning golden
You were the one who danced for the children
I was an infant born on the wind
I followed your shadow on the long road to Rouen
Where you were the dance and I was the song

It was you that they chose to carry the roses
To that kingdom of beauty where anything grows
But when they saw that your road was no more than a tightrope
They thought you were lost but you were still hopeful
You were the one who danced for the army
I was the soldier who kissed you goodnight
I followed the blood on the long road to Rouen
Where you were the dance and I was the song

As you moved on that dance-floor for a moment unsure
Until you remembered that this was the war
And the balance you craved could not be betrayed
For it simply depended on how well you obeyed
You were the one who danced for the fire
I was the smoke and the dust that remained
I followed the flames on the long road to Rouen
Where you were the dance and I was the song

Well I know that you're tired and the way is so hard
And from walking that tightrope your feet have grown scarred
So if you want we'll release you now take back the blood-vow
Come down from the dance-floor we can make it alone now
You were the one who danced for the children
I was the infant borne on the wind
I followed your shadow on the long road to Rouen
Where you were the dance and I was the song

This was the first song that I ever wrote that didn’t get thrown away. To this day I don’t know how it turned out so well. Historians today believe that Joan of Arc may not have been burned at the stake after all, but died in Orleans as an old woman. May they burn in Hell for their heresy.
