Have mercy on the
needy ones who place in us their trust
We who cannot help
them though they so depend on us
Have mercy on
their sufferings have mercy on their bones
When all their
tears fall on deaf ears have mercy on their souls
Have mercy on the
martyr when none will take his life
On the hero in his
armour who has no cause to fight
On the
broken-hearted lovers when the night's not long nor cold
And all whose
tears fall on deaf ears have mercy on their souls
Have mercy on the
criminal when there are no laws to break
On the traitor in
his solitude with no one to forsake
And the coward
with his conscience when there's no need to be bold
Each time their
tears fall on deaf ears have mercy on their souls
Have mercy on the
patient ones who wait for help in vain
On those atheistic
heathens who still pray to God for rain
And the hungry and
the homeless and the hated most of all
Each time their
tears fall on deaf ears have mercy on their souls
Have mercy on a
Saviour who has nobody to save
On the keeper of
tradition that's already passed away
On the mother with
her stricken child wrapped beneath her shawl
And all whose
tears fall on deaf ears have mercy on their souls
Have mercy now
upon the Jews have mercy on the blacks
And on those
wolves and vultures who can only hunt in packs
On Judas with his
heavy purse when the paschal lamb's been sold
Each time their
tears fall on deaf ears have mercy on their souls
Have mercy on the
needy ones who place in us their trust
We who cannot help
them though they so depend on us
The envoys of good
fortune with no news left to bring
The singer in the
spotlight with nothing left to sing.
